The Power of a Right Choice

만일 {주}를 섬기는 것이 너희에게 나쁘게 보이거든 너희 조상들이 강 저편에서 섬기던 신들이든지 혹은 너희가 거하고 있는 땅의 아모리 족속의 신들이든지 너희가 섬길 자를 이 날 택하라. 그러나 나와 내 집으로 말하건대 우리는 {주}를 섬기겠노라, 하매 (수 24:15)

The Bible furnishes ample evidence of the importance of making a right choice. Wrong choices can lead to a life of utter ruin, while right choices will lead to eternal rewards. Joshua and Caleb made the right choice when they spied out the land of Canaan and told the nation of Israel that God would help them take the land. Ten spies saw themselves as grasshoppers compared to the giants. Joshua and Caleb had faith in God and made the right choice. (Num. 13) Ten spies perished in the wilderness; only Joshua and Caleb entered the land of milk and honey.

성경은 바른 선택의 중요성을 많은 사례를 통해 보여줍니다. 잘 못된 선택은 완전히 망하는 길로 가게 되지만 바른 선택은 영원한 보상의 길로 안내합니다. 여호수아와 갈렙은 가나안땅을 정탐하러 갔을때 바른 선택을 했고 이스라엘 민족에게 하나님이 그들을 도와 그땅을 차지하게 할 것이라고 말했습니다. 10명의 정탐꾼은 자신들을 메뚜기로 보고 상대방을 거인들로 비교했습니다. 여호수아와 갈렙은 믿음이 있었고 바른 선택을 했습니다 (민 13) 10명의 정탐꾼들은 광야에서 멸망했고 여호수아와 갈렙만 젖과 꿀의 땅으로 들어갔습니다.

Abram and Lot

When the flocks of Abram and Lot became too large for them to live together, Abram offered Lot the first choice as to which part of the land he would live in. (Gen 13) Lot made the wrong choice when he chose the well watered plains of Jordan that led the way to Sodom. It can safely be said that Lot chose grass while Abram chose grace. Lot and his family ended up in disaster and shame. Whatever choice Lot may have made, you can be sure that Abram would never moved down into the well watered plains of Jordan where Sodom was located.

아브람과 롯의 가축들이 너무 많아져 같이 살 수 없게 되자, 아브람은 롯에게 땅의 어느 부분으로 갈 것인지 먼저 선택하라고 했습니다 (창 13장) 롯은 소돔 쪽으로 요르단의 물이 풍부한 평야를 택했습니다. 다시 말하면 롯은 풀을 선택했고 아브람은 은혜를 선택했다고 말 할 수 있습니다. 롯의 가족은 재앙속에서 수치와 함께 끝나졌습니다. 롯이 어떤 선택을 했던지간에 당신은 아브람이 소돔이 있었던 요르단의 물이 풍부한 평야로 내려가지는 않았을 거라고 확신할 수 있을겁니다.

It's likely that Lot had worshiped at the altars of Abram, but there is no record that Lot ever built his own altar of worship. Abram kept on building altars and worshiping God, while Lot moved closer and closer toward Sodom, until he finally sat in the gate of Sodom as an official of the city. This is the way of compromise that has devastated many believers. If we read Genesis alone, we would think that Lot was not a saved man, but Simon Peter told us otherwise.

롯은 아브람의 제단에서 경배 드렸던 것 같으나 롯이 자신 스스로 제단을 만들었다는 기록이 없습니다. 아브람은 계속 제단을 쌓고 하나님을 경배했지만 롯은 소돔을 향해 그 도시의 공무원으로 자리 잡기까지 하며 더욱 가까이 갔습니다. 이것이 많은 믿는 자들을 피폐하게 만드는 타협의 길입니다. 우리가 창세기만 읽는다면 롯이 구원받은 자가 아니라고 생각하기 쉬운데, 그러나 베드로가 그렇지 않다는 것을 다음 구절에서 말해줍니다.

2 Peter 2:7-8

7 사악한 자들의 더러운 행실로 인해 괴로움을 받던 의로운 롯을 건져 내셨으니

8 (이는 저 의로운 사람이 그들 가운데 거하며 그들의 불법 행위를 보고 들으면서 날마다 자기의 의로운 혼을 괴롭게 하였기 때문이니라.)

Lot was vexed, but he made no attempt to leave that wicked area. 롯은 고통스러웠지만 그 사악한 장소를 떠날 시도를 안 했던 것입니다.

Lot came from the same family background as Abram, but Lot's life ended in shame, while Abram went on to become Abraham - father of the nation of Israel, and shared a place in the human genealogy of Jesus Christ. The difference was the power of the choice they made.

롯은 아브람과 같은 家系에서 왔습니다. 그러나 롯의 삶은 수치로 끝나게 되고 반면 아브람은 이스라엘의 아버지로서 아브라함이 되었으며 예수 그리스도의 인간적인 족보의 길에 동참하게 되었습니다. 차이가 있다면 그들이 선택한 것의 능력이라고 봅니다.

Ruth and Orpah

They were both Moabitess widows who had married Hebrew brothers who had died leaving them childless. They were fortunate to have a widowed mother-in-law by the name of Naomi who was going back to Bethlehem (the house of bread). They both had the opportunity to go with her to Bethlehem, but Orpha turned back to Moab while Ruth chose to go with Naomi. Orpha made a wrong choice and is never heard from again.

둘 다 히브리 남자에게 결혼해서 자식을 낳지 못하고 죽었던 모압의 과부들이었습니다. 다행인 것은 베들레헴 (빵집)으로 돌아가고자 하였던 나오미라는 과부된 시어머니를 가진 것이었습니다. 둘 다 그녀와 함께 베들레헴으로 갈 기회가 있었으나 룻이 나오미와 가는 것을 선택한 반면 오르바는 다시 모압으로 돌아가고자 하였습니다. 오르바는 잘 못된 선택을 하였으며 그 후에는 그에 대한 이야기가 나오지 않습니다.

The little book of Ruth is filled with teachable truth that can be applied to life in any generation. Ruth made the right choice and received the greatest blessings imaginable. She met a wealthy man of the tribe of Judah and they ended up marrying. To me, this is one of the greatest love stories ever written. When you come to the end of the book, you find that she bore a son by the name of Obed, who would be the father of Jesse and grandfather of King David.

이 작은 룻기는 어떤 세대의 삶에도 적용할 수 있는 많은 교훈의 진리가 들어있습니다. 룻은 바른 선택을 했고 상상 너머의 위대한 축복을 받았습니다. 그녀는 유다 계열의 부유한 남자를 만났고 결혼으로 이어졌습니다. 내게는 이것이 이제까지 쓰여진 것중 가장 위대한 사랑 이야기인 것 같습니다. 이 책의 마지막 부분에 가보면 그녀가 오베드라는 이름의 아들을 낳는데 그가 바로 이새의 아버지이며 다윗왕의 할아버지가 됩니다.

This lowly Moabitess widow became the great-grandmother of David, the mighty king of Israel. This puts her in the royal line of Jesus Christ, according to the flesh.

이 미천한 모압 과부가 이스라엘의 강력한 왕, 다윗의 증조할머니가 되었습니다.

This is one of the examples of the power of making a right decision. Could anyone even imagine that this maiden of Moab would be an ancestor of Israel's greatest king, and in the family line of Jesus Christ, the Saviour of the world? According to the flesh, this could never happen, but the grace of God made it possible. She made a choice that changed her life and her offspring forever.

바른 결정의 힘을 보여주는 좋은 본보기가 됩니다. 누구라도 이 모압여인이 이스라엘의 위대한 왕의 조상이 되며, 이 세계의 구주가 되신 예수 그리스도의 가보에 들어가리라고 상상이나 했겠습니까? 육신적으로 봐서는 일어날 수 없는 일이지만 하나님의 은혜로 가능하게 되었습니다. 그녀는 그녀의 삶과 그녀의 자손을 영원히 바꾸어 놓았던 선택을 한 것입니다.

In my years in the ministry, I have seen people ruin their life by making a wrong choice. Early in my ministry, I saw an example of the ruin that can happen by a wrong choice. A young couple with a family were gloriously saved and became very active in the Church. They were there for every service, and he was faithful in visitation. One day he came to me and said that they were moving to another state. I asked him why, and he said he was going to make a few more dollars a week doing the same kind of work he was presently doing. When he told me the town where he was moving, I told them there was no sound Church there. He hadn't even considered that, but he reasoned with me that surely they could find a good church. Against my advice, they went ahead and moved. Years later they moved back to Lubbock, but they had descended into the minefield of forsaking God. In spite of all efforts, we could never get them back to serving God. They were just one of many families that made a wrong choice.

내가 사역 초반부에, 나는 잘 못된 선택을 함으로 인생을 망친 사람들을 보았습니다. 젊은 부부인데 구원받고 교회에서 아주 열심이었습니다. 그들은 모든 예배에 참석했고 심방하는 일에도 매우 신실하였습니다. 어느 날 그나 내게 와서 다른 주로 이사 간다고 했습니다. 지금 하는 일과 같은 것을 하지만 일주일에 몇 달러 더 받을 수 있다는 이유였습니다. 그가 가는 지역의 도시를 알았을 때 제가 거기에는 좋은 교회가 없다고 말해주었습니다. 그는 고려조차 하지 않으며 자기네는 좋은 교회를 찾을거라며 저의 충고를 무시하고 떠났습니다. 몇 년후 그들은 다시 루벅으로 이사 왔으나 하나님을 버린 삶으로 전락해 버렸습니다. 모든 노력에도 불구하고 우리는 그들을 다시 하나님을 섬기는 일로 돌이킬 수 없었습니다. 그들은 단지 잘 못된 선택을 했던 많은 가족 중의 하나였습니다.

When you are in a good Scriptural church, you should be very careful about moving away. Make sure it is God's will beyond a shadow of doubt. I have received many letters, emails and phone calls from people looking for a good Church, most of the time I cannot find a church for them. The church and the teaching and preaching of God's Word should be preeminent in our lives.

만일 당신이 성경적으로 바른 교회에 있다면 이사 갈 때에도 매우 조심하여야 할 것입니다. 그것이 하나님의 뜻인지 확신이 올 때 움직이는 것입니다. 나는 좋은 교회를 찾아달라는 사람들로부터 많은 편지와 이메일과 전화를 받았습니다. 많은 경우, 나는 그들을 위해 바른 교회를 찾을 수 없었습니다. 우리 삶에 있어서 교회, 가르침과 하나님의 말씀 설교가 제일 중요한 일이 되어야 합니다.

Lot made a wrong choice, but he could have corrected it if he had wanted to. Ruth could have made the same choice that Orpha made, but she did not. Instead she went on to experience the power of grace. Follow the example of Abraham, Joshua, and Ruth who made the right choice that led to the glory of God.

롯은 잘 못된 선택을 했지만 그가 원했다면 고칠 수도 있었을 것입니다. 룻도 오르바와 같은 선책을 할 수 있었지만 그렇게 하지 않았습니다. 대신 그녀는 은혜의 힘을 경험할 수 있는 길로 갔습니다. 하나님의 영광으로 인도되어지는 바른 선택을 했던 아브라함, 여호수아, 그리고 룻의 본을 따라 갑시다.
